Office Depot, OfficeMax Eye Potential Merger
As shares of Office Depot (NYSE:ODP) rose around 5% and OfficeMax (NYSE:OMX) was up 8%, Office Depot’s chief executive said Office Depot might be open to a potential deal with its rival, according to an Oppenheimer analyst. Brian Nagel, who met with company executives last week said, “A still very challenging economic environment and particularly weak white collar jobs growth continue to weight significantly upon sales growth in the office products retail category. The tone of management implies to us that sales growth at the chain is likely to remain soft in the near term.” Nagel continued to say that Neil Austrian, who assumed the role of CEO in May, sees “internal potential, but is also very open to the idea of industry consolidation and a potential transaction with OfficeMax.”
